Probing quasar winds: implications from broad absorption line (BAL) variability

This week's Lunch Talk will be given by Weimin Yi (易卫敏), at 11:30AM Nov. 14 (Thursday) in the 19th-floor Observatory Hall (天文台报告厅).  He will present his work on "Probing quasar winds: implications from broad absorption line (BAL) variability". Here is the abstract of the talk:

"Broad absorption line (BAL) quasars provide unambiguous evidence of AGN-driven outflows that may be capable of triggering AGN feedback. Despite the fact that the inner region of quasars cannot be spatially resolved with current technology, variability diagnostics allow us to probe BAL outflows.  In this talk, I will introduce our previous and ongoing studies of BALs, including some caveats and implications therein. I also look forward to possible collaborations in the future. "

You are welcome to join the discussion. We will provide boxed food from the faculty canteen. Please sign up via WeChat (Journal Club group) before Nov. 14th (Thur) 9 AM. The boxed food contains two meat dishes and two vegetable dishes by default, please add a * after your name if you want a vegetarian meal. Those who sign up but don't attend on time should pay a¥20 fee for the food, which will be used for future academic activities.
