The Milky Way disk, as a whole, is a self-regulated ecosystem. Star formation occurs in molecular clouds, whose boundary conditions are determined by the Galaxy they reside in. The stars formed in the clouds can change the dynamics of the surrounding gas. The Gaia satellite can measure the structure and kinematics of gas and stars in the Galactic disk. Based on the new view, I discuss the circulation of gas between different ISM phases, reveal the birth of disruption of giant, Galactic-Scale molecular filaments, and discuss constraints on the disruption of molecular clouds by stellar feedback. I also discuss how modern computational techniques can be applied to observational data to extract physical insights.
